the people tuning in right now. they're seeing a very different race and different paul ryan and romney than we have been watching for the entire past few months. if you just tuned in now, i think you might think mitt romney was a centrist which he has not been for the past year or so. if you are just tuning in, you might think paul ryan had pretty blue eyes and a set of solutions to aur. i don't know how biden is going to handle this. he's such a straight shooter, but maybe a straight shooter from the hip if i can mix metaphors. i'm not sure if he'll get frustrated, if he'll get angry, if he will just laugh it off, if he will come off as condescending. it will be interesting to see. >> right. clarence, "the washington post" spoke to republican voters in ohio, one of whom said of paul ryan's chances against joe biden, and i'm quoting the person, i think ryan is going to eat him alive. another said, he's dynamic, he knows his facts. do you think this is going to be a washout and that mr. ryan is literally going to trounce biden? >> i was pretty amused by that story, martin, because we were at

in the toledo area. obviously, ohio's an important state to the romney-ryan ticket. we expect paul ryan to stick to the standard substance with the five-point plan to put the middle class back to work and also going by the performance last week of governor romney. particular has a couple of events. one here in the at least area and then we're heading off to the detroit area for an afternoon event and don't expect to see him until thursday and sets up the debate against vice president biden and the past couple of days we asked how much is he prepared to meet someone with more experience. he says he knows that vice president biden will come in aggressively and maybe particularly because of the president's performance last wednesday's event in denver and he is reading briefing books, talking about issues around the country and around the world. paul ryan knows that this is a very big week for him. perhaps the biggest of his entire political career. people need to see the american voters watching that debate on thursday and see him in the vice presidential light and probably not enough for him to be

paul ryan's ideas as he is against mitt romney. that elevates ryan as well. >> it seems clear in choosing chris van holland they will go against the first ryan budget, the first medicare plan and also the ryan book. they will go after the budget cuts and troo to tag mitt romney with the severity, using the term relatively, of the ryan budget cuts. >> right. rom uh any down played the ryan road map. keep in mind the first ryan budget plan included privatizing social security, at least to a certain extent. that's something ryan then dropped in his subsequent budgets. it was there and he was one of the advocates of the plan to put it in the market. secondly the medicare issue. those entitlements, we'll ha from biden about thursday. a lot of democrats think he dropped the ball not pushing the issues against mitt romney. joe biden will read ryan's book and go after those entitlements. >> up next, as mitt romney focuses on foreign policy we'll get a reality check on the challenges abroad. as mitt romney. it's really on medicare especially, it's the ryan policies that obama is running against. and then lastly, i think what ryan and biden are defined by in a lot of ways and for biden, that's partially hit his gaffes. is he going to step in it? is there going to be some memorable sound bite from that debate? and ryan is known as the numbers guy. and the whole obama campaign now against romney and ryan is that the numbers on the republican side don't add up. so i think there's going to be pressure on ryan to explain the numbers or at least the obama folks are going to try and pressure ryan to explain the numbers. so these things usually don't matter. it's the undercard. but this time i think there could be a little more importance. >> i think you're exactly right. biden's actually a very good debater. he was very good during the democratic debates in '08. he beat barack obama every time. he is good in the debates, but boy, he can't afford to have an off night, can he? >> no. >> i mean, you talk about feeding into a narrative. i actually think paul ryan can break even and he'l

have four more years like the last four. what america needs is a real recovery. only romney and ryan can provide that. host: when the president took office we were losing 800,000 jobs a month. since the president took office, we have 5.5 million additional jobs. truck about the automobile recovering, he saved the automobile industry and 1/88 jobs in the state are reflective of the auto industry. i worked the railroad 41 years. the guys and women working there, they're happy, jumping up and down because they have employment. one out of eight jobs are connected to the auto industry. not only that, the government at the time, strickland, and the president came to and youngstown, my area, and it one of the last steel companies in the area was given a $20 million stimulus amount that created a tremendous amount of jobs, particularly 1 mile from my area, it in an area of youngstown that's really struggling. so you see this incredible turnaround. he was hit with those 800,000 jobs per month. he created the 5.5 million. just recently are finding out the unemployment level was finally dropped

this thursday on the 11th you've got paul ryan and vice president joe biden. this is going to be very important for obama's effort to stave off romney. then on the 16th you got the second obama-romney debate. on the 22nd final obama-romney debate. then the last friday before the election one more jobs number. my own inclination the job numbers aren't quite as "game change"ing for debates as for the reason voters know how they feel about the economy. they don't need a government report. it does get a lot of attention and we got a race that's plainly at this point even though obama still has a slight advantage in the battleground states this race can go either way. >> interesting. then we got the governor, of course, speaking at vmi about foreign policy, an area for which a little while he appeared to want to take the campaign, at least before the debate. how ground moving is this? >> reporter: i don't think it's very ground moving. it's not what people will vote on. for romney it's an effort to press a leadership advantage which may be one of the things that move the numbers for him after the de
